BP Allowed to act as an official authority: media access denied

 (thanks to piglipstick for link)

News networks say access to oil spill "slowly being strangled off"
NEW ORLEANS - Media organizations say they are being allowed only limited access to areas impacted by the Gulf oil spill through restrictions on plane and boat traffic that are making it difficult to document the worst spill in U.S. history.
The Associated Press, CBS and others have reported coverage problems because of the restrictions, which officials say are needed to protect wildlife and ensure safe air traffic.
Reporters are being threatened with arrest, though the Coast Guard and other authorities deny this, saying that they're just trying to protect the areas:
CBS news story said one of its reporting teams was threatened with arrest by the Coast Guard and turned back from an oiled beach at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The story said the reporters were told the denial was under "BP's rules."
It's been clear since the beginning of this disaster that BP has been allowed to act as an official and governmental authority unto itself. For example:
Chief Warrant Officer Adam Wine said White House officials had to sign off on requests for tours of the spill zone before they could proceed. (italics mine) The Coast Guard is attempting to increase access through guided boat and aircraft tours, he said. Still, there is no plan to lift restrictions on flights or boat traffic into offshore areas — including some barrier islands.

On Brane Space: Time to Move Away From the Perpetual War State

From Brane Space: Time to Move Away From the Perpetual War State; he writes:
This is Memorial Day. But, along with the fallen soldiers, serious citizens (not just empty headed consumers or mindless bible punchers) need to ponder unemotionally and sincerely why those troops died and whether, in fact, they were actually fighting for our "freedoms" as the mouths of propaganda endlessly screech, or whether they were rendered expendable cogs to promote a Pax Americana - via the engineers of a perma-war state.
Some quotes he's used in the above mentioned article:
"The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labour. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent. "- George Orwell

Also from Orwell:
"War, it will be seen, is now a purely internal affair... war is waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact. "

BP: Ham Fisted Propaganda

So the BP site has photos of clean water and happy hard working people. BP says you can use the pictures. BP says just provide a link next to the pictures. BP says you can't sell the pictures. Oh, and BP says you may not use the pictures if you're going to be critical of BP:
these images will not be used in connection with any purpose that is prejudicial to BP, its officers or employees
So I'm not using any pictures.

Also on the BP site are several pages that are propaganda items, like their page "Report From the Gulf" by BP reporters Tom Seslar and Paula Kolmar, who tell us that really, being on site  is all a great privelege:
Flying out on the US Coast Guard HC-144 aircraft to see the oil spill and mitigating activities underway was a privilege that never hit my radar of possible experiences.
Aside from this "privilege" we're also assured that they were cozy and safe, as well as honored to witness such wonders:
As I was safely belted in an airplane that had opened its aft bay doors allowing a pristine aerial view without windows between us and outside, two realities came into spectacular focus: the oil spill and the beehive of activities. Both are astounding to witness.
We're also told of the hard work of the dedicated BP workers and other infra-structure authorities:
Fellow passengers returned to the Mobile Command Center more determined than ever to do what must be done to fight this subsea, surface and onshore – whatever it takes.

Seeing it real-time, up close, eyes-on is, oddly, an inspiration to shake off the weariness, to look ahead, not behind, to dig in and focus with vigour on the task at hand.
Using the language to manipulate our reality: good old fashioned propaganda of the more ham fisted kind. We're not horrified, we're privileged.

The isn't any views of oil spills but "pristine" vistas to behold. BP and other authorities complicit in this aren't guilty of global crimes, but are trustworthy and working hard, ensuring everyone is safe while under their care while taking care of things:
beehive of activities . . . assuring safety barriers and seat belts kept everyone secure. . . the US Coast Guard's skilled execution of the flight . . .more determined than ever to do what must be done . . . look ahead, not behind, to dig in and focus with vigour on the task at hand. . .
Each page, like the cheerful little piece about "Chasing Tar Balls" and framing tar balls as something quaint like UFO sightings -- implying that both the tarballs themselves as well as the 'witnesses' can't be trusted --  delivers news of BP's "progress" with non-stop blatant propaganda. Language is constructed to greatly downplay BP's responsibility, as well as the reality of the damage done to the planet . . . instead, we are given artificial and transparent pieces on how  BP and other officials are hard at work ensuring everyone's safety; from the use of seat belts to being guided, protected and escorted, patrolling areas, and operating "with vigor." The message BP would like to convey is that all is well, delivered to us in patronizing and paternal ways. They're hard working and in control, they have the authority and the knowledge; the rest of us need to sit back and trust, allowing them to do their job.

It's scary that there are those who fall for this, but it's clear many do, given some of the reporting I've been reading and watching.

As with systems everywhere, BP doesn't care if they're believed or trusted; it's not about that. They know that all it takes is the non-stop messaging: deny and spin, over and over. They know they're transparent, they know they're full of shit, they know they're dishonest, and they know we know. But they also know, as all global- corporate- government -industry knows, that the more you say something, the more life you give it, until it becomes real on its own.

No more eating shark fin in Hawaii after new law

No more eating shark fin in Hawaii after new law.
HONOLULU – The $48-a-plate shark fin has been a favorite dish to celebrate 80th birthdays and fete out of town VIPs since Vienna Hou's Chinese restaurant opened 25 years ago.
But Kirin Restaurant customers won't be dining in that style starting July 1, 2011, when Hawaii becomes the first state in the nation to ban the possession of shark fins. The state is attempting to help prevent the overfishing and extinction of sharks around the world.

Australia to sue Japan over whaling

Australia to sue Japan over whaling.
SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia said Friday it would begin legal action next week to stop Japan killing hundreds of whales a year in the name of scientific research, prompting immediate condemnation from Tokyo.
Officials said they would lodge documents with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague "early next week", abandoning diplomacy after repeated threats to sue.
"We want to see an end to whales being killed in the name of science in the Southern Ocean," said Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett.

Madman Makow: "What's Wrong With Gays in the Miliary?" (Plenty, he says)

One of my favorite self-indulgent things to do is to parse Henry Makow. Makow, for those that don't know, is seemingly Jeff Rense's BFF, since Rense links to Makow's crazy-homophobic-misogsynistic-anti-Semitic-1950s pinko commie paranoia posts all the time.

Makow's latest is on his site savethemales.com (yeah, I know, cute, huh?) about gays in the military: What's Wrong With Gays in the Military? A reader asks Makow:
I'm not gay, but I ask--what's the problem? Homosexuals are among the world's best killers, always have been, and Uncle Sam eagerly recruits expert killers. Alexander the Great was a swish. His dad, Phillip was 'bi.' Frederick the Great made no secret of his gayness. Julius Caesar was said to be "a husband to to women and a wife to men." Some say the Confederate General D. H. Hill was gay. The Spartans--among the world's best soldiers--encouraged homosexuality in the belief it encouraged men to fight harder on the battlefield. Homosexuals are everywhere, all the time. Personally I don't see why anybody would want to join the bloodthirsty US military, but if gays want to, why stop them? If a  bomb or bullet arrives at their position, it won't stop to ask if they are gay or not.
Bi is in quotation marks, why I don't know, and we're informed of the interesting factoid that "homosexuals are among the world's best killers. . ." -- something about this supposed reader's wording has me think it's a set-up. Makow responds:
The hidden agenda behind allowing gays to serve openly is to undermine the Armed Forces. Proselytizing/predatory gays represent an enemy within.
Makow then wonders why no one seems concerned about the rights of heterosexual men who don't want to be around gays:
Straight men do not wish to face an external enemy while at the same time fending off sexual overtures from the rear.
Those italics are Makow's, not mine. He really said that! Gays are out for one thing: to seduce and recruit straight men. That's their goal but so is destroying the military from within:
Homosexuals will gain rank and use it to extort sexual favors. Discipline and morale will decline. The ranks will divide along gay-straight lines as straights repel unwanted attention.
Er, if straight men are hetro and don't want to be around homosexuals, then how could gays "extort sexual favors?" Do gays have super powers we don't know about, stunning us and then having their way with us?

Makow has no idea how funny he can be at times, in between his paranoid ravings.
A homosexual in the army is like being a mouse in a cheese factory.
Makow can be unintentionally funny, and, while his mad and bizarre articles are both funny and surreal, make no mistake: this guy is serious, and so are his followers. These are real people out there who think this way, and that's scary. And Rense promotes him.

Makow actually doesn't have issues with "responsbile" homosexuals, just these kinds:
My issue is with the way homosexuality is being foisted upon heterosexuals by the Illuminati to subvert society.
And ah, here it is: where Makow puts it together. No matter what Makow writes about, it all gets down to one thing. All evil comes forth from the same tangled web of pinko-lesbo-Illuminati-Jewish-gays who are out to rule the world:
Homosexuality is by definition an attack on heterosexual values. These values are necessary for effective armed combat. They include courage manliness, and sacrifice for comrades, family and country. Homosexuality is not about family, or even country. By their own admission, many homosexuals are driven by a sociopathic resentment of society bordering on subversion. They have this in common with organized Jewry which is nothing but an agent of the Masonic world central banking cartel, and its world government agenda. That's why homosexuals and Jews/crypto Jews/half-Jews fill the ranks of the Illuminati. (The Illuminati are the secret society within Freemasonry erecting the NWO.)
There's a lot more, including what Makow writes, in complete seriousness, that Obama is "believed to be bi-sexual/gay." But I can only stand so much fun for one day.

As I commented above, it's ridiculous on the surface to take Makow seriously, of course. But he is popular and there are people (good great goddess they could be your nieghbor!) who think like Makow, as the comments left on his site reveal. That's scary.

"Alien" Fish Type Creature Captured in China

A fisherman caught something very weird, to him. . . something he'd never seen before. Something odd and unidentified.

Turns out it was a snapping turtle, but it is not known in that part of the world:

A fisherman in China was surprised to catch a mystery creature which looked like a cross between a dinosaur and a turtle.

Sun Yongcheng's catch, in Weishan Lake, Anhui province, was later identified as an alligator snapping turtle, which is not native to the country.

The species is only native to North America and was probably someone's pet before being dumped in the lake, the local fishing department said.

More here, with photo, and the turtle does look like something like an alien dinosaur!

Time to Fucking Pray

It's time to do something, anything, and in desperation, in fear, in hope, for love, in anger, it's time to pray. Whatever that means to you, however you do it, pray. Fucking pray, because we need it, the Earth needs it, all living beings  -- which is all things, in my view, --- need it.

Intent.
Intent.
Intent.

Intent

INTENT.

Not "will," but "is."

Pass it on.

Cannon Beach, OR To Build "Tsunami Safe Structure"

Eugene (KMTR) - The city of Cannon Beach is moving forward with plans to build a first of its kind tsunami safe structure.

On Monday a model of the structure was put to the test at the Oregon State University Tsunami Wave Basin.

The ten thousand square foot building would be resistant to the forces of a nine-point two magnitude earthquake, and tsunami that follows.

It would also serve as a vertical evacuation shelter.

A Move For Plum Island?

Mad scientist juxtapositions. Earlier I posted about multi-millionarie Dr. Venter's creation of life in the lab, and Berkeley's push for students giving their DNA  swabs to university scientists. Now Plum Island is in the news again; owned by the feds, the "Plum Island Animal Disease Center" is planning on moving from New York to Kansas. This move has Representative Tim Bishop fighting the move:
Tim Bishop said Monday he's written to the leaders of a House subcommittee on Homeland Security, saying he had "serious concerns" with the proposed sale.
Hearings on the sale, which could still be years away, are scheduled for Wednesday in Connecticut and Thursday on eastern Long Island.
Why Homeland Security? And what are the "serious concerns?"

The new proposed lab which, in a Fortean name-game context, will be moved to Manhattan, Kansas, and re-named the "National Bio- and Agro-defense Facility." "Agro defense...?"  Oh, this just gets stranger and stranger . . .

According to Speakers: Preserve Plum Island as habitat, people in the area want Plum Island to "preserved as a wildlife sanctuary and public recreation area rather than being sold to the highest bidder..." I'd be nervous about using that area for either of those things, given the history of the place. There are several conservation groups working to save Plum Island for those purposes. The area has:
been identified by state and federal environmental and wildlife agencies as one of the most important bird habitats in Long Island Sound,
Aside from the push to have Plum Island become a refuge, the loss of jobs in the area is another concern. If the lab moves, the area's economy will change and not for the better.

The article concludes with this understatement:
Also speaking at the meeting was Matthew Fritz, special assistant to Gov. M. Jodi Rell. He said the governor is concerned that too little is known about the type of work that went on at the lab to assess how the proposed sale and redevelopment would impact Connecticut, its coastal resources and development of an emergency response plan.[italics mine]

Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction Department

I often make facestious comments about "Dr. Evils" -- mad genius scientists, academics, and the like -- who experiment with nefarious intent. Here's a real life example, that sounds like it should be an Onion piece or a plot from a graphic novel:
Dr Craig Venter, a multi-millionaire pioneer in genetics,[italics mine]
has created life in his lab. Venter's "team":

. . . manufactured a new chromosome from artificial DNA in a test tube, then transferred it into an empty cell and watched it multiply – the very definition of being alive.
The article explains how they did it, and Venter says it's "synthetic" life. It started out this way:
First they sequenced the genetic code of Mycoplasma genitalium, the world's smallest bacteria that lives in cattle and goats, and stored the information on a computer.
Then they did more stuff involving bacteria and moving "watermarks" and all. Venter says, of the implications for this new, --  um, invention? -- :
"This becomes a very powerful tool for trying to design what we want biology to do. We have a wide range of applications [in mind]," he said.
What "we want biology to do?"  Doesn't biology have its own ideas?
As to that last comment about a "wide range of applications" I bet they do indeed.

Berkeley Wants Your DNA

On the piglipstick blog, this news item:

It's voluntary so far, but new students at UC Berkeley are being asked to submit their DNA:
The students will be asked to voluntarily submit a DNA sample. The cotton swabs will come with two bar code labels. One label will be put on the DNA sample and the other is kept for the students own records.
The confidential process is being overseen by Jasper Rine, a campus professor of Genetics and Development Biology, who says the test results will help students make decisions about their diet and lifestyle.

Another Stabbing in China

(See my previous post on the stabbing of school children in China.)

Another fatal stabbing of school children in China: Stabbing attack on Chinese nursery kills seven children and teacher
A stabbing attack on a nursery in China has left a reported seven children dead and more than 20 injured.
The copy-cat attack in the city of Hanzhobg, Shaanxi province, is the most recent in a spate of stabbing attacks on schoolchildren in China.
It is thought today's violence targeted very young children - all thought to be under the age of six - with local media reporting their teacher is among the dead.
Authorities are reporting that the killer then went to his home and committed suicide.

Since the first attacks, security has been increased in schools, and children are being taught self-defense.

UPDATE: Stabbing Signals

I had written this a couple of days ago, but just got around to posting it an hour or so ago. Checking the news, I found this: Man stabs eight people to death in China. More on this at end of piece:

Recently, stories have come out of China of people attacking -- and killing-- children in schools. USA Today reports on threats to schools after a wave of killings in schools:
The school attacks began with the stabbings in Nanping. The man convicted for that crime was executed on April 28, the same day a 33-year-old former teacher broke into a primary school in the southern city of Leizhou in Guangdong province and wounded 15 students and a teacher with a knife.

The next day in Taixing city in Jiangsu province, a 47-year-old unemployed man armed with an 8-inch knife wounded 29 kindergarten students five seriously plus two teachers and a security guard.
In the latest attack on children, a farmer hit five elementary students with a hammer Friday in the eastern city of Weifang before burning himself to death.
After that, Chinese authorities arrested men for threats they made to children. One school received a threatening letter:
Iu Yongche, 39, was detained on May 2, a week after a local elementary school in Wuxi, west of Shanghai, received an anonymous letter demanding about $14,700. It threatened to harm students and teachers if the money was not paid, said the deputy director of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau, who gave only his surname, Chen.

Chen said that Liu, a migrant worker from neighboring Anhui province, is under criminal detention. A government notice published in state media said Liu was short of cash due to gambling debts.

"I'm so poor and I hope your school could help me out by putting $14,706 into my account... Otherwise, I'll have no other choice but to do it," the official Xinhua News Agency quoted the letter as saying. Liu threatened an attack similar to one in March in Nanping, in southeastern China's Fujian Province, where a man killed eight primary school children.

I don’t know the status of schools in China, but I wonder at the thinking that a school would have spare money.

Another man had posted the following comment on the internet:
The second man, who was only identified by the surname Hu, was detained from Monday through Wednesday after posting a comment on an online bulletin board suggesting "to kill a kid to have some fun."

Here in the U.S.,  another stabbing attack took place inside a Target store in West Hollywood (my old nieghborhood) California. Layla Trawick ran down aisles, armed with knives, stabbing people, including children:
Layla Trawick, 34, had just stabbed four people, including a woman holding a baby, slashing at shoppers in an apparently random attack at the busy store Monday, authorities allege.
Note the use of the words “apparently random.” The following is interesting:
The woman was heard screaming “there is no witness protection program!”

An off duty deputy happened to be in the store at the time:
Grant grabbed his duty weapon, identified himself as a sheriff's deputy and ordered the woman to drop the knives, he said. She ran away and he followed her from aisle to aisle before she surrendered.

"She finally dropped her knife, and I was able to place handcuffs on her," Grant said.

Deputy Grant made the call not to shoot Trawick; he was aware of her state of her mind:
"Her facial expression was someone who was lost, confused, didn't know exactly where they were," Grant said
Which indicates various possibilities such as drugs, mental illness/psychotic break, or, mind control.

Back to China; at I stated at the beginning of this piece, another stabbing took place in China since I posted this.

BEIJING (AFP) – A man stabbed to death eight people, including three family members, in eastern China, state media quoted police as saying Sunday, the latest in a spate of attacks that have shocked the nation.
The suspect Zhou Yezhong killed his mother, wife, daughter, four neighbours and one migrant worker with a knife at about 6:00 pm Saturday (1000 GMT) in Chengyuan village, Badu Township, in Jiangxi province, Xinhua news agency said.
He was caught at about 7:50 pm by police and an investigation is under way.
Cities around China have taken preventative measures following a series of attacks on children.
On April 30, a farmer armed with a hammer injured five children and a teacher at a primary school in the eastern province of Shandong before setting himself on fire.
A day earlier, a jobless man apparently angry over a series of personal and professional setbacks slashed 29 children and three adults at a kindergarten in the eastern city of Taixing.
That attack came a day after a 33-year-old teacher placed on sick leave for mental problems injured 15 students and a teacher in a knife attack at a primary school in southern China's Guangdong province.
And on the same day, authorities in Fujian province in the southeast executed a former doctor for stabbing to death eight children and injuring five others in March in a fit of rage after he broke up with his girlfriend.

American Chronicle | The Usual Purple Tinged Hyperbole About UFOs

American Chronicle | The Usual Purple Tinged Hyperbole About UFOs

National ID Card Buzz

I just noticed the number of alerts on my Yahoo page on a National ID Card. There are several links to news items about this. The ACLU is balking at the proposed plan to "require all workers in the United States to carry an ID card with biometric identifiers." Chips, in other words, RFID thingies in your wallet.

Playing the esoteric,  Fortean name game we find that the plan for the ID card is called "Believe." As in, believe in us, the authority, the state, the controllers, the government, the feds, industry, business, corporations, banks, record keepers, data collectors. Believe stands for "Biometric Enrollment, Locally-stored Information and Electronic Verification of Employment."

Not that it makes much difference but it's sadly a Democrat who's behind this idea. Majority Whip Senator Dick Durbin in fact, who says:
"For a long time it was resisted by many groups but now we live in a world where we take off our shoes at the airport and pull out our identification," Durbin said. "People understand that in this vulnerable world we have to be able to present identification."

"Call of Duty" New Black Ops Game

I don't play games like this; my nerd trait manifests with blogging about UFOs and related topics (like military themed games) and creating virtual farms and apartments with little fairy pets on Facebook.

So I'm not savvy about the fine points of playing games like this, but I have seen the advertising about Call of Duty games, and it's always disturbed me that these games, which glorify war and authority are popular. A new Call of Duty  game is due out in November; it's called Black Ops. Black Ops! Now that's chillingly interesting:
The new game is called Call of Duty: Black Ops and will take place "behind enemy lines." It's being developed by Treyarch, who created the 2008 Call of Duty hit, Call of Duty: World at War, and is due out November 9 of this year.

Here's the link to a brief preview of the game.
