New Orleans moves to get rid of last FEMA trailers - Yahoo! News

The few remaining are on the hit list of Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who's vowed to rid New Orleans of blight by eliminating 10,000 broken-down properties over the next three years.

"This administration wants to turn a page on Katrina," said Gary Clark, a Dillard University political science professor. "The FEMA trailer has become an icon of Katrina."

But some advocates fear Landrieu's zeal to eliminate blight will hurt poor people struggling to find their way in New Orleans more than five years after Katrina flooded 80 percent of the city in August 2005.

"The blight eradication program, if not done correctly, can become a poor-person eradication program," said Lance Hill, the executive director of the Southern Institute for Education and Research, a race relations center based at Tulane University.

He said many poor people were not given the help they needed to rebuild. "We never had a resettlement agency in this city for five years."

The city is warning trailer residents that they are in violation of city zoning ordinances and that waivers granted after Katrina will not be renewed. A letter that Weber received said the city understands "the challenges residents have endured post-Katrina" but that the trailers are blight.

More on TSA in Austin, TX and Claire Hirschkind

Recently, I posted a news items about would be airline passenger Claire Hirschkind, who has a pacemaker type device for her epilespy. She is also a rape victim survivor. In that post, I mentioned the willing sheeple behavior of other passengers, who, after watching Ms. Hirschkin get pushed to the floor in tears, handcuffed, and dragged along the airport floor, said things like:

"I understand her side of it, and their side as well, but it is for our protection so I have no problems with it." (Gwen Washington,Killeen, Texas)

"It's unfortunate that that happened and she didn't get to fly ... but it makes me feel a little safer." (Emily Protine)

Ms. Hirschkind was also upset by those comments:

Hirschkind, though dismayed by these reactions from the flying public, remains determined to educate others that, contrary to the opinions of these travelers, TSA policy is not law.

Hirschkind had called ahead to the airport, inquiring about TSA procedures, explained her situation, and yet when she arrived, found things very different from what she was told earlier.

America in Decline: Why Germans Think We’re Insane | Disinformation

America in Decline: Why Germans Think We’re Insane | Disinformation

The European Union has a larger economy and more people than America does. Though it spends less — right around 9 percent of GNP on medical, whereas we in the U.S. spend close to between 15 to 16 percent of GNP on medical — the EU pretty much insures 100 percent of its population.

The U.S. has 59 million people medically uninsured; 132 million without dental insurance; 60 million without paid sick leave; 40 million on food stamps. Everybody in the European Union has cradle-to-grave access to universal medical and a dental plan by law. The law also requires paid sick leave; paid annual leave; paid maternity leave. When you realize all of that, it becomes easy to understand why many Europeans think America has gone insane.

Video: Police state expansion?: Mobile prison guard towers showing up in local neighborhoods!, page 1

On the Above Top Secret site, this uber-scary story of more Big Brother fascism, courtesy of Wal Mart. (from last January, I believe...) The clip shows movable guard/prison/police watch towers.

Remember that not long ago, Homeland Security joined with Walmart to spread propaganda via video messages encouraging the hoi polloi to report suspicious behavior to Walmart managers, the police and authorities as part of Homeland Security's "If you see something, say something" campaign. Walmart is the among the first chosen to spread this propaganda, but others will soon follow:
Partners include the Mall of America, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Amtrak, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, sports and general aviation industries, and state and local fusion centers across the country. In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America’s businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the country safe. (Men With Foil Hats site)
These towers, according to the clip and comments on ATS, are not just in Walmart lots, but other places as well. Interesting how Walmart is right at the front of this fascist push to spread this fear inducing, paranoia grabbing message to a population that is becoming more and more sheep like ("I understand it's for our own good; I feel safer" responses) and therefore, more easily controlled.

The Oil Slick BP Tried To Hide Has Been Discovered

As the writer points out, many have said from the beginning that the oil is at the bottom of the gulf, despite BPs and our government's denials. And yet, oil has been found:
Indeed, as the Wall Street Journal noted on December 9th:

A university scientist and the federal government say they have found persuasive evidence that oil from the massive Gulf of Mexico spill is settling on the ocean floor.
The new findings, from scientists at the University of South Florida and from a broad government effort, mark the latest indication that environmental damage from the blowout of a BP PLC well could be significant where it's hardest to find: deep under the Gulf's surface.
Scientists who have been on research cruises in the Gulf in recent days report finding layers of residue up to several centimeters thick from what they suspect is BP oil.
The material appears in spots across several thousand square miles of seafloor, they said. In many of those spots, they said, worms and other marine life that crawl along the sediment appear dead, though many organisms that can swim appear healthy.

Spy and Snitch With Your Smart Phone With PatriotApp!

(Thanks to piglipstick for story and link.)

You can spy and snitch away on neighbors and strangers and the rest of us the hoi polloi, with a new smartphone app by Citizen Concepts' Patriot App. The application links your cell phone to the FBI, CDC, EPA and other agencies.

Citizen Concepts announces the launch of PatriotAppTM, the world's first iPhone application that empowers citizens to assist government agencies in creating safer, cleaner, and more efficient communities via social networking and mobile technology. This app was founded on the belief that citizens can provide the most sophisticated and broad network of eyes and ears necessary to prevent terrorism, crime, environmental negligence, or other malicious behavior.
"More efficient?" That smacks of allegiance- to- the- state- mentality -propaganda hyperbole. They close with these reassuring words, oh, and a blinking real time "terror alert" button:
PatriotApp encourages active citizen participation in the War on Terror and in protecting their families and surrounding communities.

Ohio Bucks GMO Trend Across Midwest
Ohio Ag Connection - 12/20/2010

When it comes to a rapid adoption of transgenic corn hybrids across the Midwest, Ohio growers appear to be bucking the trend and holding more tightly onto their non-GMO hybrids.

Though far more transgenic hybrids are available to growers than non-GMO (genetically modified organism) hybrids, Ohio growers are snatching up non-GMO seed and planting more non-GMO acres than their Midwest counterparts, including Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.

Peoria pursues pharmacy ID checks

Peoria, Arizona, is proposing fingerprinting citizens in order to get their prescriptions. So far, this doens't seem to be an across the board proposal. Just individuals filling prescriptions for "commonly abused drugs" (OxyContin, etc.) This includes anyone picking up the prescription for someone else; spouse, etc. Even though they're not the one taking the medication, if you pick it up, you'll be fingerprinted.

Conditions at Heathrow: Part of a Plan?

I can't help but see some plan in action, having to do with England's increasing fascist state. Like the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere, we are seeing open displays of indignities upon masses of people. In the following report, one passenger, Jillian Hardy, shares her experience of being trapped at Heathrow with literally thousands of others:
After the snow hit, they hauled us into the arrival area. I have never seen anything like it. It was packed with thousands of people, it was hot, and there was nowhere to sit or lie down,"
Food and water quickly ran out, thousands of people were stuck at the airport overnight. Hot, then cold:
"At 4 a.m., we could see our own breath," said Hardy. "I have no idea why they decided to shut off the heat. Luckily I had a jacket and mittens in my carrying bag. But some people were heading to Florida and were not dressed for the weather, including little kids and seniors. It was awful."
No food, water, overheated, then no heat. Then, this surreal action:
While Hardy and other passengers sat shivering on the floor without any blankets (even after asking Heathrow employees for some), the airport decided the best way to soothe its tired, hungry customers, was to blast loud rock 'n' roll Christmas music. Hardy didn't sleep at all that night.

Over the top propaganda: TSA Sings at LAX

Just this morning, Jim was ranting about the Associated Press item in today's paper (Cost of Flying: Travelers resigned to scans, delays) about the "sheeple's" acceptance of the TSA tactics and "need" for scanners, intrusive body searches, etc. The article is a masterpiece of sheer propaganda. Stories intended to bolster our unquestioning acceptance of our fascist state: the story of a young girl who had her snowglobe gifts confiscated, yet found two more just like them for $11.00 each at the gift shop,(she paid just over $6.00 for the originals) quotes from passengers who are glad our nation is secure, and the married couple who fly separately so  their children won't be "instant orphans" in case of a fatal terrorist attack. There is also the trivialization of any would be critics: there is some "eye rolling" going on, which frames anyone who dares to question or complain as nothing more than a pouty pre-teen not to be taken seriously, not to be respected and not heard.
The article highlights chosen phrases, separating them out; by doing this, the message is subliminal, yet strong. The young woman who had her snowglobes taken away, while annoyed, also understood. In fact, she:
She bit her tongue and obeyed.
Those who question authority are nothing more than spoiled children:
There are still plenty of eye-rolling moments, however.
Quotes from some who choose to drive instead of fly, but AAA insists there isn't a significant increase in this kind of travel. The article is full of quotes from people who accept the TSA's tactics because it's making us "safer."
The protests across the country over the Thanksgiving holiday have ceased, according to the article. Those protests are termed as "revolt" and we're assured the majority of passengers are "behaving" and "obeying"
Then, I come across the following item (thanks to piglipstick for the link) about TSA employees performing for waiting passengers at LAX. Yes, it's all about a joyful spirit as you wait in line to be scanned by DNA twisting, cancer causing machines (said machines owned by ) Not only are Christmas and holiday songs on the agenda, but patriotic songs as well; America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Battle Hymn of the Republic.  The TSA singers have other songs on their repertoire and it's not restricted to holidays, but the message is clear: TSA entertains and is our friend.
"We've been taking a lot of heat for what we do" at TSA, said Perez, referring to body scanners and aggressive pat-downs of travelers. "We just put a new face on TSA — I think a positive face."
This is so transparent, such an obvious and ridiculously surreal propaganda ploy it is amazing that they're getting away with it.

From Above Top Secret: POLICE STATE - TSA, Homeland Security & Tampa Police Set Up Nazi Checkpoints At Bus Stations

Police state is here; now TSA is at the bus depots. Take a Greyhound, get searched. And, as the OP at Above Top Secret site commented, the news cast for this chilling news is a puff piece, a "shill" bit. Interviewed passengers are shown who say they feel safer now, and the authorities on the clip warn us that "they'll be back," we won't know when, or where, but be ready.

And according to one poster at ATS, "training" is now taking place at Amtrak, and searches like this will be coming after the New Year at train stations.

Former Blackwater bought by investment group - Yahoo! News

Blackwater, now Xe, might now become known as another name. Whether or not the name remains intact, Blackwater Xe has been bought by yet a new bevy owners:
An investment group with ties to the founder of the company formerly known as Blackwater announced Friday that it has bought the security firm, which was heavily criticized for its contractors' actions in Iraq.
USTC Holdings said in a statement that the acquisition of the company now called Xe Services includes its training facility in North Carolina.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But the statement said owner and founder Erik Prince will no longer have an equity stake and no longer be involved in Xe's management or operations. The company will be managed by a board appointed by the equity holders and will include independent, unaffiliated directors, the statement said . . . The ownership group is led by two private equity firms, including New York-based Forte Capital Advisors.

Operation Golden Phoenix: Nuclear Attack "A Survivable Event"

The following article about nuclear attacks is getting play in the news today; this item appeared in newspapers across the country:
L.A. dry run shows urban nuke attack 'a survivable event' -
Al-Qaeda played no part in planning the July 28 attack. The conspirators were the leaders of a dozen state, local and federal agencies who were taking part in a simulated L.A. County security exercise code-named Operation Golden Phoenix. Their mission: to assure that if a terrorist does detonate a nuke in Los Angeles, first responders will be prepared to wade into the devastation and rescue survivors suffering from traumatic injuries, radiation sickness, shock and flash-blindness.
This item appeared in our local paper, as well as everywhere else. They really want to get this message out. Jim and I both had the same reaction to this when we read it this morning: that "they" (you know, "them") want us to feel comfortable and accepting of a war like, catastrophic event, like a nuclear attack, as the following quote illustrates. Why, and why now? It seems these little memes of attacks and alerts and warnings increase around the holidays, particularly Christmas.
"This is a survivable event," says Brendan Applegate, of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Asymmetric Warfare, who helped design and carry out the exercise. "L.A. isn't going to fall into the ocean and be gone forever. It will be a really bad day, but we need everyone to show up to work and save lives."
"It will be a really bad day?!"

After reminding us that staying indoors, staying put, is the only safe thing to do during a nuclear attack, (Shelter in place . . . It runs counter to your basic instinct to get away and reunite with family members. If their kids are in school or in day care, that's where they should stay," he says. . . Stay indoors. Wait for news. . . Stay in, stay safe. Wait for instructions.) the deep subtext of the following comment begins to reveal itself:
"When we talk about resiliency, we're not talking about how to be resilient against a flood," he says. "It's a question of how do we, as a nation, preserve constitutional government if an event like this occurs."

Stop S.510, the fake food safety bill, at your state line The PPJ Gazette

GM, bio tech agri-biz wants our gardens; like the laws that forbid citizens from collecting rainwater, this law is one more way to control what we put into our bodies, and how we choose to live.

Stop S.510, the fake food safety bill, at your state line

GMO oranges, China, and the loss of another piece of America’s agricultural base

Another insidious GM event; this time it's our oranges. The reason given is "greening" which is an interesting term, given the use of "green" to denote, and invoke postive and conscious actions concerning our food, energy and envirnoment. Greening or citrus greening is a bacterial disease that is very damaging to fruit and trees. However, natural methods to resist greening are ignored by the U.S. biotech/agri-biz. Insted of natural alternatives, the usual allieance of agri-biz corporations are:

Southern Gardens is a unit of Florida-based U.S. Sugar Corp and it has been working, under field trial permits issued by the USDA’s Biotechnology Bioregulatory Services arm, with researchers at Texas A&M University and a Florida company called Integrated Plant Genetics on the development of transgenic greening-resistant trees.
Mirkov’s own work, which he said could lead to the first commercial plantings in as little as three years, involves inserting a few genes from a plant that he identified only as “commonly consumed around the world,” into citrus trees to make them resistant to greening. (Reuters)

The above is being outsourced to China:
In a bid to curb overall costs, but also to accelerate research, Arnold said an agreement with the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China was being used to conduct some of the more labor-intensive work into psyllids, citrus germplasms and disease resistance.
“The labor in China is reasonable and inexpensive, so we’re taking advantage of that,” Arnold said. “They can hire a whole line of technicians, maybe 70 technicians and line them up, for the same amount of money that it would take us to hire three or four,” he said. (Reuters)

Ironically, China has successfully used natural methods to combat greening.

Thank you Colin Andrews, I needed this. Anything helps, it can't hurt. Jim and I have been feeling very scared and depressed lately, realizing with a deep in the gut awareness that things will never be the same. The U.S. and the world is going through such horrific changes on every level. Among which are the human controllers who are so arrogant, greedy and evil that they do their thing right in the open, right in front of us. Little Personal Info Invasions

So this evening, I drive into the 76 gas station that I've been going to for twenty years. Even though I was put out by them as a consumer for their corporate decision to no longer put air in the tires for customers, I continued, out of laziness because the location is convenient, to buy most of my gas from them.

Tonight, I hand over my card at the pump and the attendant asks me for my zip code. First time there I'd ever been asked that. I said "Why do you want to know that?" and he tells me it's a new thing, it's to verify my card. I said that I have my ID, (which, I know, has my zip code on it) I've been coming here for twenty years, and I'm not giving my zip code.  He said "the system won't take the card unless you give your zip code." So I gave him the wrong zip code, but of course it didn't go through, because the system already has my zip code. I told the attendant he can pass on to his corporate fascists that I won't be coming to their gas station anymore, that this slow invasion of privacy and requests for information is "ridiculous," and I left.

This has nothing to do with verifying a card, and everything to do with the ever increasing demands for personal information and general hoop jumping. Turn over any info when requested, no questions asked, and allow yourself to be searched or subjected to whatever thing it is they decide to have you go through.

The good thing about this incident is that it reminded me to stop being lazy and use only cash for transactions. For as long as that will last. Legally, businesses are not required to accept cash. That "legal tender" on bills does not mean businesses must accept literal cash. Semantic game playing loop holes rule; dollars must be accepted, and those dollars can be in the form of credit cards and debit cards. Exceptions would be if a particular state made it illegal for any business to reject cash, but, no state has done so. So, if a business wants to take only plastic and reject your cash, they're within their rights.

My reaction to a seemingly insignificant thing, and no doubt par for the course in the big cities, but the moment seemed like an omen, one that I found myself responding to in a slightly surprising way.  And what of the marginalized, those who don't have credit cards or debit cards? Answer from society: screw 'em. In the context of what's been happening in the world, and in our own country which is tumbling down the fascist rabbit hole at an alarming speed, it just seemed too much. I just had a "fuck-you-I'm an old hippie- damn it- pissed-off-senior moment" and couldn't take it any more at the time.

Navy Joins BP in Food Propaganda

Astounding and surreal in its overt greed. Ray Mabus, Navy Secretary is urging all members of the armed forces to eat seafood from the gulf to show that it's safe. Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board director Ewell Smith, Mabus has agreed to push this not only on men and women in the various branches of the military, but, Smith says, Mabus:
" in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf,”  who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, “whether it’s the military or prison systems or school systems.”
School systems??!!!

Interesting how the three institutions named above: military, prison systems and schools, are ones that have a captive and relatively forced population of people to target.

As if that isn't bizarre enough (have the people in power been taken over by reptilian overlords?) the  Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board is working with BP to promote gulf seafood as safe to eat; they've been given $30.00 million dollars to use in their campaign propaganda.

NY City: Police State Theater

Truth is stranger than fiction; Blade Runner meets Until the End of the World meets The Matrix meets The Prisoner, oh, you know .. the police state they started creating on September 11th is now here, as if we didn't know that already.
There are so many police," said Jackie Carey, 71, of Wilmington, Del., as she looked over Rockefeller Plaza crowds from the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral. "There's like about five policemen on the corner. How many policemen does it take for you to get across the street?"

Cameras are everywhere; images captured are watched by:
software [that] searches constantly for suspicious activity, such as an object that does not move for a long time. The computers can also search for specific shapes and colors, such as a suspect wearing a green jacket. In September, police added 500 more cameras to the system.
Random searches of bags and those wishing to visit the Statue of Liberty must go through "two separate, airport-style security checkpoints."

Aside from the heavy visual reminders of Big Brother watching you every moment (with its sub-message: don't step out of line) citizens are encouraged to be paranoid of each other, and to feel a sense of civic pride in snitching on their neighbors:
In rail stations, travelers are bombarded with messages warning them to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

In the subways, train conductors tell passengers, "If you see something, say something." So do posters and ticket machines.

Ilene Zatal, 62, says she used to look forward to buying her monthly Metrocard because of the poetry the city printed on the back of them. . .

"Within five miles of where you live, there are enough strange things to keep you wondering all your life," she said, reading a verse from E.W. Howe. "Wonderful. Before, they used to all say things like that."

And, like fascist states, which heavily control the arts and creative expression, those beautiful lines of poetry once given freely for all to enjoy, have been replaced with this reminder:

Then she pulled out her current card.

"If you see something, say something," it said in Spanish.

Naomi Wolf tried to tell us in 2007 with her book The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot and her ten steps to a fascist state. Read an interview with Wolf here.

Private Goons in Hardin, Montana: Hoax?

Last night I posted an item about a private security firm "taking over" the town of Hardin, Montana: Are you SURE it's the police?

That post caused "Sherlock" to leave the following comment:
The myth of the APF taking over the town of Hardin, Montana, won't die.

On September 10th, the day that the arrangements for career California con man, "Michael Hilton," became known, I exposed him as a fraud, proving that most of his contentions were transparent lies and that his corporate "history" was a fabrication.

Despite making half a dozen phone calls and sending 18 e-mails with my findings to the regional media in Billings, the AP and the Gazette took another day to demonstrate the slightest skepticism regarding the hoax. For the next two weeks they continued to treat the scam as if it had some element of truth, until after I'd sent them and TV station KULR 26 pages of face sheets of breach of contract, recission and unlawful detainer suits brought against Hilton in the two decades plus of his perpetrating scams. I sent two criminal cases as well, though I couldn't tell if they were for this "Michael Hilton" or not. I had also discovered 17 aliases that he'd been using since the '80s.

There were two gaps in the almost endless record of scams in which he was involved. I presumed he had been in jail for those two or three year periods. It turned out I was correct again.

Despite my efforts, the beat reporter from the Gazette, a woman I'd long been trying to get removed from the jail scam beat, actually quit her job of 20 years at the paper to go to "work" for Hilton. He paid her with a Mercedes SUV and probably one of the many bad checks he'd kited around town to a Hardin innkeeper and a Billings lawyer. The MB SUV was repossessed a couple of weeks later.

Alex Jones arrived in Hardin, weeks after I'd blown the cover of the con man and exposed the stupidity of local officials who'd been taken in by him. Anyone with a room temperature I.Q. should not have been taken in by the silly sting, but Alex either was too stupid to see what was happening in front of him, too delusional to be able to distinguish illusion from reality, or he found the fake story too delicious and valuable, in terms of his own ego gratification and unwarranted fame, to abandon it.

Whatever his reasons or shortcomings, The myth has persisted for the last 14 months because people need fables when truth doesn't serve their purposes.

"Octopusconfessional" should be ashamed of itself, as should Regan Lee for continuing to perpetuate these myths, but both have a lot of company. There's hardly a day goes by when I do not receive still another breathless, often "eyewitness" account regarding the supposed existence of something that never actually happened.

"You could look it up," as they say.

So I looked up some things, starting with Sherlock's profile and links to his blogs. Nothing on the profile, and one link to a blog seems to be dead, the other leads to a blog with no posts.

I did find this however on The United American Freedom Foundation site.
(There are other sites and comments about this on various message boards; this is one example of the tumble fest  down the rabbit hole of this hoax-not-a-hoax.) Frankly, I'm confused; the company does seem to be real, what their motives are is murky, and, while they may or may not have been heavy handed Blackwater Monsanto owned Xe thug types or just some money making scam, they seem to have appeared as real cop like authorities.

But then, there are plenty of links and items pointing to the melodrama of the hoax idea. Which, here at Octopus Confessional and its tentacled array of blogs, is a moot point, since it's all part of the trickster tweaking that goes in para-politics and esoteric realms. It's to be expected: confusion, hoaxes, hoaxes about hoaxes, and all the rest. From a Fortean perspective, this is not unusual at all.

Monsanto Now "Owns" Blackwater (Xe)? | Before It's News

Monsanto Now "Owns" Blackwater (Xe)? | Before It's News:

Many military and former CIA officers work for Blackwater or related companies created to divert attention from their bad reputation and make more profit selling their nefarious services-ranging from information and intelligence to infiltration, political lobbying and paramilitary training – for other governments, banks and multinational corporations. According to Scahill, business with multinationals, like Monsanto, Chevron, and financial giants such as Barclays and Deutsche Bank, are channeled through two companies owned by Erik Prince, owner of Blackwater: Total Intelligence Solutions and Terrorism Research Center. These officers and directors share Blackwater.

One of them, Cofer Black, known for his brutality as one of the directors of the CIA, was the one who made contact with Monsanto in 2008 as director of Total Intelligence, entering into the contract with the company to spy on and infiltrate organizations of animal rights activists, anti-GM and other dirty activities of the biotech giant.

Jesse Ventura Refuses To Fly, Interview on Alex Jones

TSA's Intentional Chaos

Recent articles about the TSA are interesting for what they say in between the lines. From The Washington Post: Confused and Abused by the TSA:

The agency appears to be phasing in these new procedures unevenly, leading to frequent confrontations with air travelers. At some airports, passengers are being randomly asked to go through the scanners, while at others, they must all be screened by the machines or by hand. At one airport last week, passengers were both scanned and frisked.
As a result, air travelers aren't sure what to expect when they fly. [italics mine]

It's not a mistake the procedures are random; the seemingly chaotic nature of the TSA's rule changes is intentional. This is a tactic to ensure that we are kept nervous, anxious, and so, easier to control. The authorities show us, over and over again, that they can do what they want, when they want, and we, the people, never know when things will change. All they want us to know is that we better be prepared to jump when they say jump, and ask, how high. Think of the abuser and his victim: control, things changing on a whim, arbitrary and even silly, meaningless rules that must be followed, without question. If you question, you will be punished. You might be punished anyway, just because.

Many are calling for November 24th to a "National Opt Out Day," in which citizens refuse these screenings. The article wonders if "the timing couldn't be better," by the TSA's decision to implement these new, confusing and often conflicting rules. Coming so close to one of the busiest travel times in the U.S., not such a good idea. But this is precisely what the feds want: to instill anxiety, fear and confusion. Frustrations and rebellions are quickly dealt with by a bit of fear mongering, with warnings of terrorism, and a lot of threats in way of fines, interrogations and arrest.

Are You SURE It's the Police?

Chilling article: Private Security Continues to Invade American Towns, on the Intel Hub site. More and more, American towns are seeing private security firms behaving as if they're the police. From their appearance: uniforms, logos, vehicles, that often share the same elements as the local police forces, to their behavior which crosses  lines of legality, these private security firms are becoming more blatant (as we saw with the BP disaster in the Gulf, for example.) This is scary and one more blatant signal that the police state has come to America, sometimes being called out works:
Last year, it was discovered that a private security company, American Police Force, had entered the small town of Hardin, Montana and had assumed the duties of patrolling the town and enforcing laws. APF had originally been contracted to provide security at a detention center near Hardin. However, not long after, residents were answering to them as if they were real law enforcement personnel. APF “officers” were soon driving around in police patrol vehicles, harassing citizens, and acting as if they were truly the authority in Hardin. Only after the independent media, such as Alex Jones’ Infowars, exposed APF did the mercenaries leave Hardin.
Encouraging, but Brandon Turbeville, author of the article, warns us not to take any of this casually. These firms have no real authority:
While one can argue that there is a place for private security companies, there is no argument to be made for their assuming duties designated to local police forces. It is important for everyone to remember that private security forces, whether contracted out by the government, businesses, or acting alone, have no jurisdiction. They are not police officers and should not be treated as such.
Another point Turbeville makes; these private firms make a lot of money, and their thugs do as well, more so than the police with legal authority. Privilege, money, and the arrogance of the insulated, private realm of hired guns set against the overworked, underpaid men and women who are given authority are the ingredients for disaster.

Buying a Car a Little Harder Now - News, Sports, Jobs - The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - If you're in the market for a car, be prepared to prove you are not a terrorist.
The federal government's Red Flags Rule mandates that auto dealers, banks, credit unions and other "creditors" and "financial institutions" take additional steps to prevent identity theft and fraud, beginning Jan. 1. Included in the list of so-called creditors is your family doctor.
Among those steps is determining whether a person applying for financing - or even paying cash for a car - appears on any government watch lists of known or suspected terrorists or terrorist organizations.
As a result, consumers hoping to finance a new or used car, a home or even a major appliance will be required to supply personal information - such as their Social Security number and birth date, as well as the answers to five questions designed to confirm a customer is who they say they are - to the business at the time of the sale. Those questions could include anything from previous addresses and area codes to the names of other members of the consumer's household.
"...or even paying CASH for a car . . . " ?!

Getting harder to slip a little from that grid.

Micah Hanks and Comments on Jesse Ventura's JFK Assination

Micah Hanks, at his blog Gralien Report, reviews Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Theory (on TRU TV) and specifically, last nights' episode on the JFK assassination.

I agree with Hanks that this was one of Ventura's best programs. Like many of us, I remember the day John F. Kennedy was killed; I was sitting on the long wooden bench by the morning glory covered chain link fence, eating my lunch, at St. Mary Magdalene school. I was nine years old. The announcement came over the loudspeakers. Like everyone else, students, teachers and staff alike, we were shocked. In tears. Terrified, and horribly confused. The school shut down, everyone went home, where we watched the news on television for days, from John F. Kennedy's murder to his funeral to Jack Ruby's shooting of Oswald.

When I was a teenager, my father became obsessed with the assassination, reading every book on the subject as soon as it came out. I remember a lecture he took me to on the assassination; I don't remember the speaker (a local L.A. television news reporter) and the topic was the cover-up, and how Oswald was a only a patsy.

Back to last night's episode: I wondered about one thing. Ventura interviewed Marina, Oswald's widow, and she said at the time of the assination, she believed that it was her husband who killed Kennedy when the police told her. I understand some of that response; she was very young, new to this country, poor, and married Oswald after knowing him for only six weeks.  She was no doubt intimidated by goons and government spooks and the sheer immensity of the fact the president of the United States had just been assassinated. But at that the same time, I wondered why she would believe that her husband was capable of such an act? I am not saying I believe, for one moment, that Oswald was the assassin; I am convinced that Kennedy's assassination (as was his brother's) a plot and Oswald was used. I just found Marina's comment about her acceptance of her husband being capable of murder an interesting one.

Frankenfish: Animal Drug

(cross posted at my blog swallow a chip lately, anyone?) without our input, and without our knowledge.

In June of this year I posted on my blog Octopus Confessional,   about "Frankenfish" in 'Dr. Evils Mess With Fish':
While many no doubt see this as a good thing, I find it chilling. Maybe I'm just too paranoid in my old age. I love salmon, so who wouldn't want bigger and more? Not me, I don't trust it, and it is so wrong on many levels. The following New York Times article Genetically Altered Salmon Get Closer to the Table, gives us the happy news about genetically messed with salmon, still to be approved by the FDA.
The developer of the salmon has been trying to get approval for a decade. But the company now seems to have submitted most or all of the data the F.D.A. needs to analyze whether the salmon are safe to eat, nutritionally equivalent to other salmon and safe for the environment, according to government and biotechnology industry officials. A public meeting to discuss the salmon may be held as early as this fall.
This Giant Salmon was developed by the happy sounding titled "AquaBounty Technologies" which raises the Giant Salmon (a mix of the Atlantic, Chinook and pout salmon) in fish farms.
If approved and the Giant Salmon clears various environmental and other hurdles, other genetically modified animals will be offered to us, such as the "enviropig."
The FDA isn't treating the Giant Salmon like food, exactly:
Under a policy announced in 2008, the F.D.A. is regulating genetically engineered animals as if they were veterinary drugs and using the rules for those drugs. And applications for approval of new drugs must be kept confidential by the agency.
Critics say the drug evaluation process does not allow full assessment of the possible environmental impacts of genetically altered animals and also blocks public input.
“There is no opportunity for anyone from the outside to see the data or criticize it,” said Margaret Mellon, director of the food and environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. When consumer groups were invited to discuss biotechnology policy with top F.D.A. officials last month, Ms. Mellon said she warned the officials that approval of the salmon would generate “a firestorm of negative response.”
Some within the infra-structure are well aware of the politics and implications involved. In an understatement to be sure, an individual who wants to remain anonymous said:
Government officials and industry executives say the F.D.A. is moving cautiously on the salmon. “It’s going to be a P. R. issue,” said one government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the issue.
Genetically modified foods do not have to be labeled; consumers apparently don't have the right to know.
Foods must be labeled, it says, only if they are different in their nutritional properties or other characteristics.
Ignoring, among other things, that altering and modifying foods, splicing them with say, glowing fish or spider webs, affects the "nutritional properties."

In a display of spin and topsy turvy thinking, AquaBounty representative Mr. Stotish says he's not against "voluntary labeling" but gee, it's not up to him:
but the matter was not in its hands because it would only be selling fish eggs to fish farms, not grown salmon to the supermarket.
He said the company had submitted data to the F.D.A. showing that its salmon was indistinguishable from nonengineered Atlantic salmon in terms of taste, color, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, proteins and other nutrients.
“Our fish is identical in every measurable way to the traditional food Atlantic salmon,” Mr. Stotish said. “If there’s no material difference, then it would be misleading to require labeling.”
And finally, no need to fear the impact of  Giant Salmon on the environment, because all the fish are:
female and sterile, making it impossible for them to mate.

Today's news brings us the following: From 10 Freakiest Things About Frankenfish
Obama's FDA is regulating genetically engineered salmon, a genetically modified organism (GMO) that is the first of its kind, not as an animal, but as an animal drug. Normally, a veterinary drug would be used for health purposes, but there's no therapeutic benefit associated with jacking up an Atlantic salmon with the genes of a Chinook salmon and the eel-like ocean pout to make it grow twice as fast. On the contrary, genetic engineering increases the salmon's mortality, disease and deformity. So, why would the FDA treat a the first genetically engineered animal for human consumption like a drug? The idea came from the biotech industry. They knew that the FDA's animal drug process would keep companies' "proprietary" information secret, while limiting public participation and downplaying food safety concerns. Genius.
The above is from a slideshow of Frakenfish related facts and links about the FDA, genetically modified foods, engineered DNA, and the surreal reasoning behind laws governing such.

From slide 3; Frankenfish DNA Could Change the Bacteria in Your Gut:
A human study conducted by the UK's Food Standards Agency found that consuming genetically engineered soy can result in "horizontal gene transfer," where the bacteria of the gut takes up the soy's modified DNA. With GMO salmon, the bacteria of our digestive tracks could take up the engineered salmon genes, but the FDA isn't looking into whether this would happen or how it might effect our health.

And the afore mentioned surreal realm of regulations and laws: slide 7: If It Swims Like a Salmon, FDA Says its Safe to Eat. Slide 6 informs us that AquaBounty, the company hoping to control sales of altered salmon, is the place where the FDA has gathered its data on the safety of Frankenfish salmon:
The FDA's food safety review of GMO salmon consists of collecting data produced by AquaBounty, the company that wants to sell it. Not surprisingly, that data is seriously flawed. * AquaBounty did not always segregate, or even collect, data specific to their AquAdvantage GMO Salmon. And, FDA did not require AquaBounty to produce data in the actual conditions under which the salmon will be commercially produced, so we don't have food safety data on the Panama-raised, triploid, monosex AquAdvantage Salmon that people will be actually be eating if the FDA grants approval. * FDA did not require AquaBounty to show that AquAdvantage and normal salmon were similar when raised under the same conditions. AquaBounty's food safety data for genetically engineered salmon did not have to match data for its control salmon. [For the rest go here.]

Besides the overall bizarro world, surreal nature of all this, along with the greed, is the sheer arrogance of the FDA and others promoting shoving Frakenfish upon us:
The FDA notes evidence of "increased frequency of skeletal malformations, and increased prevalence of jaw erosions and multisystemic, focal inflammation" in the tissues of GMO salmon. Most people wouldn't be too surprised to learn that genetic engineering can mess a fish up. What might shock you is that the FDA dismisses these findings as "within the range observed in rapid growth phenotypes of non-genetically engineered Atlantic salmon." [ Slide 9]

At the risk of sounding like a paranoid Tea Party-Bagging Illuminati wacknut, there is a lot to ponder when it comes to greed, arrogance, -- sheer hubris -- and control. Would Dr. Evils and mad politicians go so far as to destroy natural habitats to gain power and profit?:
Two months ago, a copper mine failure in China's TingRiver killed millions of fish. A similar disaster at Pebble Mine could mean the destruction of a quarter of a billion pounds of salmon, curiously, about the same amount of GMO salmon Aqua Bounty hopes to produce. The EPA could stop Pebble Mine through the Clean Water Act but has failed to act. Greenberg writes, "More transgenic fish, less wild fish. You have to scratch your head at a government that's planning that kind of seafood menu for its citizens. Instead of endorsing a risky experiment in genetic salmon modification wouldn't it be better if our leaders protected wild salmon habitat? In the end we'd have just as much fish on our plates and a safer environment to boot." [Full item here.]

You can sign a petition here urging Obama to stop the creation and sale of altered salmon.

Sick and Dead Sea Lions Washing Up on Oregon Coast

Sick, dying and dead sea lions are coming ashore along the Oregon coast. Rise in sea lion deaths traced to disease.

The sea lions are thought to have leptospirosis. There are warnings to avoid wet sand, and to not touch the sea lions, dead or alive (which is a given anyway, one would think) as leptospirosis can be transmitted to humans.

A sharp increase in the number of sick and dead California sea lions has been reported along the Oregon Coast in recent weeks, and necropsies conducted on dozens of the animals suggest that many may have died from leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease found in a variety of animal species and can be transmitted to humans, said Jim Rice, an Oregon State University scientist who coordinates the statewide Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
"We are now getting calls for multiple sick or dead sea lions daily, which is higher than normal," said Rice, an OSU Marine Mammal Institute researcher who works at the university's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. "The overall number of sea lions also has risen, so it's difficult to compare mortality rates from year to year, but certainly we're seeing an increase in animals that test positive for leptospirosis."
Dogs need to be careful too; dog owners are urged to keep their dogs on leashes (which is the law anyway, but good luck with that one, given the number of arrogant dog owners who insist their dog is different, special, and are immune to innate doggy behaviors) :
Dogs can be infected with leptospirosis through contact with stricken seal lions. Rice said coastal visitors should always avoid sea lions on the beach and during outbreaks of leptospirosis should keep their dogs on a leash. The disease can be transmitted by direct contact, or even through contact with damp sand, soil or vegetation contaminated by the urine of infected animals.

Just within the past few days, an item appeared in the news that sea stars (star fish) were washing up on Oregon beaches; I posted about that here.

Star Fish Wash Up on Oregon Beaches

Hundreds of star fish -- "sea stars," more correctly --  have washed up on an Oregon beach and scientists don't know why.  Heceta Beach, well known to myself, since I live roughly fifty miles from there and visit that area frequently, witnessed the mysterious die off of sea stars this past Thursday. So far, no other Oregon beaches have reported mass beachings of sea stars; just Heceta Beach:

“We found it very curious,” said Justin Ainsworth, shellfish biologist with the wildlife agency. “We haven’t had any calls like this in my time here. We contacted past biologists from this office and they couldn’t recall anything like it in the past 30 years.”
Even more curious was the fact that, after they made calls to the coastal wildlife offices in Astoria and Coos Bay, they realized that Heceta Beach seemed to be the only place where the phenomenon occurred.
Theories include the recent storms in the area as a cause for the sea star deaths, but the article points out that  other scientists disagree with that idea since the storms affected other areas, which didn't report any incidents of washed up animals. See Die-off of sea stars at Florence unexplained:Heceta Beach appears to be the only spot along the Oregon Coast where the creatures washed up.

Jellyfish Swarms: Menacing or Misunderstood?

In recent years, reports of havoc caused by swarms of jellyfish have inspired speculation that these simple, otherworldly creatures are capitalizing on changes we have brought to ocean ecosystems.

Scientists are finding we could be jellyfish's potential benefactors. Overfishing relieves them of competition and predators. Nutrient-rich pollution can cause phytoplankton blooms, providing feasts for some jellies and reducing the water's oxygen content, which could favor their high tolerance for low oxygen. The warmth of climate change could foster expansion among some species. We transport invasive species to new environments, where they thrive. And coastal development provides new shelter for the jellies' stationary life stage, called a polyp.
An article called "The Jellyfish Joyride," published in 2009 in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution, discusses the theory that, without a change on our part, these pressures could push ecosystems topped by fish and marine mammals to devolve into ones dominated by jellyfish, as they may have been 500 million years ago.

It is exactly the type of summary Steven Haddock dislikes.
Too easily villainized?

Thanks to Doc 40 for the item: a California student found a GPS object on his car, and, well... turns out his musings on if he was being tracked were founded. Yes, he was, by the FBI. Who showed up and demanded return of their little toy. Yasir Afifi, a twenty year old student and American citizen, had the interest of the FBI for "three to six months."

Jesse Ventura's "Conspiracy Theory" Returns

Jesse Ventura returns with Conspiracy Theory on TRU TV. Last night's opening episode was about biological experiments at Plum Island. Valid questions, gone unanswered: why is Plum Island moving to Kansas, why is Homeland Security in control, what were those creatures that washed up on shore anyway, are our representatives in Washington really so naive and/or stupid, (that last one being rhetorical.)

The Filthy Rich, Behaving Filthy

Item on the Doc 40 blog, about the rich, the very very filthy rich, and their anger. Yes, they're angry. They're fed up. They're damn mad. They're tired of being kicked around.
yes, some of the richest, most pampered people on the planet — people who literally wallow in luxury every day, with never a concern about losing a job, a home or health care, or getting their kids into college — these people are wailing in self-pity. They are Wall Street hedge-fund operators, which essentially means they are high-flying financial flimflammers. What has stoked them into an elitist fury is a Barack Obama proposal to close off a ridiculous tax loophole that has let them pay only 15 percent of their lavish income in taxes, rather than the 35 percent rate that us commoners pay. One of the richest of the ragers, Steve Schwarzman of the Blackstone Group, sees Obama's proposal as an outrageous intrusion into the suites of the elite, comparing it to "when Hitler invaded Poland."

DOD Attempt at Destroying New Book Operation Dark Heart

Linda Moultan Howe reports on the DOD's attempts to buy up all copies of St. Martin's Press release: Operation Dark Heart, by Anthony Shaffer, who is retired military. This after, according to Howe, the government succeeded in forcing St. Martin's Press to make changes to the first run; even so, the Department of Defense, CIA, and other agencies want the books destroyed.  Why does our government want to ban this book?
